MINNEAPOLIS – One of the University of North Dakota’s most famous former athletes says he is in favor of eliminating the “Fighting Sioux” nickname.
Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson – who played basketball at UND – said Friday he was concerned that many schools wouldn’t schedule UND because of the nickname.
When asked if he thought dropping it was the right thing to do, he said, “I believe so, even though it’s not a consensus among the Native Americans in the state.”
Jackson’s Lakers were playing at the Target Center on Friday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
