Winston 'Barney' Barnes, 81, of Tioga, North Dakota, died Thursday, January 14, 2010 at the Tioga Long Term Care Facility in Tioga.
Winston 'Barney' Arlin Barnes was born July 14, 1928 to Joseph and Pearl (Hallett) Barnes in Evanston, Wyoming. He was raised and educated in Evanston. As a young man Barney always had a job, from delivering newspapers to herding sheep and helping shuck grain. In 1944 he went to work for Union Pacific Railroad.
He met Harriet Campbell in August 1945 and they married January 8, 1946. To this marriage three daughters were born, Pam, Linda and Christie. In 1946 Barney went to work for Amoco in Wyoming and Colorado. The family then moved to Tioga in 1959 where he continued to work for Amoco and he retired as a measurement supervisor. Harriet passed away on August 15, 1981.
On February 12, 1983 he married Audrey Durand in Grand Forks, North Dakota. They resided in Tioga for several years before moving to Minot in 2004.
Barney loved to tease, and always had a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing carpentry work. He enjoyed working with old cars and traveling. He loved being with his daughters and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Audrey of Minot, ND: daughters, Pam (Skip) Brilz of Strasburg, CO, Christie (Conley) Eide of Tioga, ND; stepdaughters, Daryce Van Hoff of Thompson, ND, Elaine (Thomas) Elledge of Wasilla, AK and stepson, Larry (SueZ) Durand of Minot, ND; grandchildren, Robin Brilz of Aurora, CO, Todd Brilz of Strasburg, CO, Shannon (Shayne) Mollet of Powers Lake, ND, Brandon Midboe of Palmdale, CA and Caleb (April) Eide of Tioga, ND, Melissa Van Hoff of Eden Prairie, MN, Audra (Brad) Myerchin, Carissa and Kayla Durand all of Minot, ND; 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. Also survived by brothers, Sterling Barnes of Sunset, UT and Vernon (Marva) Barnes of Arco, ID; and son-in-law, Leon Moe of Tioga, ND; and sister-in-law, June Vickrey of Torrington, WY.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Harriet, daughter Linda S. Moe, brothers Melvin and Virgil and sisters Velma, Stella and Clarice.
Friends may call at the Fulkerson Funeral Home of Tioga on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and an hour prior to service at the church on Monday.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 18, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Tioga. Pastor Sandra Anderson will officiate and interment will follow at United Cemetery.
