U.S. Customs and Border Protection reminds travelers planning trips across the border into the United States to make sure they have their proper documents and to anticipate possible heavy traffic during the observances Wednesday of Veterans Day in the U.S. and Remembrance Day in Canada. Travel tips include:
- Familiarize yourself with the “Know Before You Go” section at www.customs.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg to avoid fines and penalties associated with importing prohibited items.
- Know the difference between goods for personal use and commercial use.
- Do not attempt to bring fruits, meats, dairy/poultry products or firewood into the U.S. from Canada without first checking whether they are permitted.
- Consult the CBP Web site to monitor wait times at the port of entry at Pembina, N.D. Information is updated hourly.
- Plan extra time into your trip.
- Prepare for the process before arriving at the inspection booth by having crossing documents ready and cell phones turned off.
- CBP officers have the authority to conduct searches without warrants.
