IN THE MAIL: Medicare rates stay low despite Dorgan’s ‘clout’

It’s amazing to see clearly partisan letter-writers attacking state leaders who have balanced North Dakota’s budget, produced a surplus, set aside a reserve and funded programs such as education and health care, while touting Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and the rest of the delegation for their so-called “clout in Washington.”

BISMARCK — It’s amazing to see clearly partisan letter-writers attacking state leaders who have balanced North Dakota’s budget, produced a surplus, set aside a reserve and funded programs such as education and health care, while touting Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and the rest of the delegation for their so-called “clout in Washington.”

Has anyone noticed that the federal Medicare reimbursement rates for North Dakota’s hospitals and nursing homes are dead last in the nation?

Standing up and taking a bow for funding that would come to the state through formulas and other normal channels is not clout. Clout is getting our fair share of a basic federal program from Washington — a program such as Medicare, which is funded by Congress.
