A $3.96 million bond issue to fund an addition to Sweetwater Elementary School in Devils Lake failed to muster enough votes in a special election Tuesday.

Superintendent Steve Swiontek said 55 percent of voters approved the bond, but the vote needed 60 percent.

He said 1,976 ballots were cast, with 1,085 “yes” votes.

The project called for replacing a 30-year-old portable that Swiontek said is antiquated and adding six classrooms and a new gym for a total space of 20,000 square feet.
