More snow and wind part of advisory for Grand Cities, part of northern valley

It's spring, but Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and the northern Red River region are not going to escape the winter weather that's blasting through the Northern Plains, the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks says.

Spring has sprung a leak in more ways than one. Besides flooding, Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and the northern Red River region will see a share of the nasty winter weather that's blasting its way through the Northern Plains.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for part of the northern valley, that continues through 7 a.m. early Wednesday. Snow may be heavy at times - 4 to 8 inches, with locally heavier amounts, are possible over the extended advisory period, and north winds with gusts reaching 30 mph are expected to arrive Tuesday, creating very difficult, hazardous travel conditions.

The Grand Forks area counties in the advisory area are Polk, Norman, Marshall, Pennington, Red Lake, Mahnomen, eastern Walsh, Grand Forks, Steele and Traill counties.

The New Rockford, Lakota and Cooperstown, N.D., areas are in a separate winter weather advisory area that ends at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Conditions will be worse farther south, including the Fargo-Moorhead area, which is in a winter storm warning area, the weather service says, and parts of South Dakota and North Dakota are in a blizzard warning today and Tuesday. The North Dakota portion of the warning expires at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The spring snow storm is expected to drop a foot of snow or more along the North Dakota-South Dakota border into adjacent portions of west-central Minnesota.

The New Rockford, Lakota and Cooperstown areas are in a winter weather advisory until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
