Dr. Carl Samuel Osmundson

Dr. Carl Samuel Osmundson died on March 21, 2009 at the age of 44, after a three-year battle with cancer. He is best known as an exceptional physician and loving father of two beautiful girls, Katie (7) and Olivia (5).

Carl was born August 9, 1964, in Grand Forks, ND, to James and Rozean (Taylor) Osmundson. He graduated from Grand Forks Central High School. In 1994, he married Patricia Boucher in Minneapolis, while attending the University of North Dakota Medical School. At the same time, he served as a Captain in the National Guard with the 187th Medical Battalion.

After graduating from medical school in Grand Forks in 1998, Carl and Patricia moved to Virginia Beach, VA, where Carl completed his residency at the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk. Carl and Patricia moved back to Minnesota with their girls in 2003 and settled in Big Lake. Carl continued his medical career at the Buffalo Clinic P.A. in 2004, and quickly developed a reputation as a keen diagnostician. He worked in the Monticello Clinic for a year, doing traditional inpatient/outpatient medicine. He went on to develop the inpatient hospitalist program for the Monticello Clinic at the Monticello-Big Lake Community Hospital. As of 2008, he served as Medical Director for both the hospitalist and inpatient rehabilitation programs.

While proud of his medical accomplishments, Carl was most interested and involved in raising his family. The Osmundsons could frequently be found on the ski slopes at Powder Ridge, and recently returned from a family ski trip in Big Sky. He enjoyed the outdoors, and had decided that if he was going to have to endure the cold of Minnesota, he would make the most of it by hunting, camping, and riding his new 4-wheeler. He hunted moose with his father-in-law in Alaska, fished with his brother-in-law in the Boundary Waters, and swam with his girls in the water parks at Wisconsin Dells. He was known as the man who had an answer for every question on the crossword puzzle and two of every tool in his garage.

Carl was preceded in death by his father James William Osmundson of Myrtle Beach, SC. He is survived by his wife Patricia Osmundson, D.D.S.; his daughters Katie and Olivia; his mother Rozean Osmundson and sister Patricia Falkowski, both of Myrtle Beach, SC; his brother Rodney Osmundson of East Grand Forks; and grandmother Viola Osmundson of Grand Forks.

Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24th at the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, 250 East Broadway in Monticello.

Carl’s service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 440 Lake St. North in Big Lake, where friends and family will say goodbye to this truly great husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and doctor.
