A 10-year-old boy was killed in a mobile home fire in Salol, Minn., on Tuesday night. The boy, Kodiak Robert Alan Nelson, was found by firefighters inside the home, according to the Roseau County Sheriff’s Office.By: Archie Ingersoll, Grand Forks Herald
Deborah Nelson and her son, Kodiak, were in bed when they noticed a fire in their Salol, Minn., mobile home, said Roseau County Chief Deputy Terry Bandemer.
“The smoke detectors were going off,” he said. “There wasn’t much time.”
Nelson, 31, escaped the Tuesday night blaze through a window, but 10-year-old Kodiak wasn’t able to get out.
“She tried to go back for him and couldn’t get to him,” Bandemer said.
The Roseau and Warroad, Minn., fire departments responded shortly after 10:30 p.m. to the Timberline Trailer Court along state Highway 11.
In a 30-below wind chill, firefighters battled the blaze that quickly consumed and “completely destroyed” the home, Bandemer said.
Kodiak’s body was found inside the home. An autopsy is planned.
Bandemer said Nelson was taken to LifeCare Medical Center in Roseau, where she was treated for smoke inhalation, burns and trauma. She has since been released from the hospital and is staying with friends and relatives, he said.
As is customary, the state fire marshal, state investigators and the sheriff’s department are looking into the fire.
The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
