Medical marijuana backers push bill in Minnesota

Supporters of medical marijuana aim to put a bill on Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s desk this session.

ST. PAUL — Supporters of medical marijuana aim to put a bill on Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s desk this session.

They say they’re going ahead with the effort even though Pawlenty’s opposition hasn’t changed.

The Republican governor says he stands with law enforcement groups who say their job will become harder if Minnesota becomes the 14th state to allow medical marijuana.

The bill’s Republican and Democratic backers include GOP Sen. Paul Koering (KOHR’-ing), who says he considers Pawlenty an open-minded person and hopes he will listen to the case for medical marijuana.

A similar bill passed the Senate two years ago but didn’t get a vote on the House floor.
