'Best Christmas Pageant Ever' opens at Red River High School

"The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" opens Friday at Grand Forks Red River High School. Performances are set for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday in the school's Performance Hall.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children, students and seniors.

The public is invited to a reception at 6 p.m. Thursday, before the parents' preview night performance, to celebrate the Summer Performing Arts program's honor of being one of 12 programs to receive the 2017 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program award.

At the reception, Grand Forks Mayor Mike Brown and Grand Forks School Superintendent Larry Nybladh are scheduled to speak at 6:30 p.m.

Dean Opp, the director of SPA which is in its 30th season, and Sydney Warcup, a Red River High School senior, accepted the award at ceremony last month in Washington, D.C.

The recognition, which included a $10,000 award, is the nation's highest honor for after-school and out-of-school arts and humanities programs.

The Fire Hall Theatre presents the classic radio play, "A Christmas Carol," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The production will be performed as a live radio broadcast.

The Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra presents a concert, themed "A Russian Winter," at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Empire Arts Center. The concert will feature Tchaikovsky's First Symphony and winners of the Young Artist Competition,

A pre-concert talk, by Conductor Alejandro Drago, begins at 1:30 p.m.

Also coming Monday to the Empire is "Magical Medora Christmas" starring Grand Forks native Job Christenson. Showtimes are 3 and 7:30 p.m.

The UND Varsity Gentlemen's Winter Concert begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at Christus Rex Lutheran Church, 3012 University Ave. The event is free, with donations going to Sanford Children's Hospital.

The University of Minnesota Crookston Jazz Band performs its annual "Jingle Jazz Concert" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Kiehle Auditorium on campus. It's free; no parking permits required.
