Fantasy author to visit Ferguson Books

Author Michael Barron will be at Ferguson Books and More signing copies of his new fantasy book, “Valora,” on Saturday.

Barron, an Indiana native, will be at the Grand Forks bookstore from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. He is also scheduled to read a chapter from his book at noon.

“Valora” is a fantasy adventure story that Barron said was inspired by many pulp stories. The novel follows a feudal superhero whose life is twisted into a nightmare.

Barron has written about a variety of topics. Some of his stories have appeared in an issue of the online magazine “House of Horror,” the “Welcome to Indiana” comic anthology and “Roboterotica.”

“I like to be diverse in what I write about,” Barron said. “I would get bored if I was always writing about the same thing.”

Barron said he likes variety in his writing and when sitting down and writing a book, he likes to try to entertain his inner 12-year-old. He said he writes anything ranging from creepy horror stories to fun fantasy-adventure stuff.

“It’s a lot of fun for me to switch gears like that,” he said. “It keeps me on my toes and allows me to write about all sorts of things.”

Barron said he often looks for stories about what he would do if he were in a crazy or stupid situation. He said he tries to put himself into those situations and see where the story takes him.

When not writing, Barron works as a medical technologist in the Indianapolis area.

This will be Barron’s second time visiting Ferguson Books. He said the bookstore is very friendly to independent authors.

“They’re great people to work with, and I couldn’t be more excited to visit the people of Grand Forks.”
