For the first time, the popular musical “Spring Awakening” will be performed in Grand Forks.
The 2006 rock musical that won eight Tony Awards, including best musical, will be performed by a local cast July 29 to Aug. 2 and from Aug. 5 to 9 at the Empire Arts Center.
“Spring Awakening” is a musical that explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood for a group of 19th-century students. The musical explores themes such as morality, youth, sexuality and family. Because the show explores adult content, “Spring Awakening” is intended for mature audiences only.
Chris Berg, the director of the show, said the show pushes the envelope, but he expects the audience will still find the musical enjoyable.
“I’ve never had any negative feedback,” Berg said. “It’s on TV all the time now. There’s nothing that we’re doing that hasn’t been on any primetime TV show.”
Chris Berg said although the musical takes place in late-19th century Germany, the play is still very contemporary and relevant to today’s audiences.
“The trials and tribulations that these teenagers are going through in the play are also the same problems that kids today face.”
Berg said those wishing to attend the show can expect good music and good theater.
“It’s just a really good script and a really good score that even though it takes place in 1891 is easy to understand.”
