Three women were winners among the 14 singers who competed in the North Dakota district Metropolitan National Opera Auditions at UND. They were:

- Vania Margani, a graduate student at the University of Manitoba who sang "Song to the Moon" from Dvorak's opera "Rusalka."

- Mezzo sopranos Clara Osowski from Brooklyn Center, Minn., who sang "Smanie implacaili" from Mozart's opera "Cosi Fan Tutte."

- Mezzo soprano Heather Kozak from Winnipeg who sang "Nobles Seigneurs, salut!" from Meyerbeer's opera "Les Huguenots."

Each winner in the district competition that took place Nov. 19 at UND received more than $500 in prizes and is eligible to advance to regional auditions set for Feb. 4 at the Ordway in St. Paul. There they will compete with singers from the Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Iowa districts for a chance at the national finals.

The finals competition will be on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in March. Vocalists there will compete for up to $15,000 in individual prizes and could be chosen to study in the Metropolitan Opera Young Artist program.

Given Encouragement Awards and $250 each were Leah Walters, a soprano studying at Dickinson (N.D.) State University; and Esther Peterson, Kirkhoven, Minn. Also singing in the district auditions were tenors Evan Montgomery, Grand Forks, and Tony Tammoro, Bemidji; sopranos Jessie Fisher, Bemidji; Ashton Foreman, Fargo; and Maja Lisa FritzHuspen, originally of Bismarck. G. Paul Larson, Grand Forks, is director of North Dakota auditions.
