VCSU’s Shirley appointed Minot State president
MINOT, N.D. -- The State Board of Higher Education appointed Steven Shirley, president of Valley City State University in Valley City, to lead Minot State University as its next president.
Shirley will replace David Fuller, who plans to retire in June.
Two other finalists the board interviewed at its meeting Thursday were Martin Slann, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Texas at Tyler; and Lorrie Clemo, provost at the State University of New York at Oswego.
Shirley has six years of experience at the helm of VCSU. Before taking the presidency there, he served as vice president and dean of student affairs at Dakota State University in Madison, S.D.
In his application letter, Shirley notes his family has strong ties to the Minot community.
Shirley earned his bachelor’s, master of business administration and doctoral degrees at the University of North Dakota.
His appointment will be effective after a successful background check and negotiated contract. Shirley’s latest salary at VCSU was $188,088.
While an official start date has not been set, it will not be later than July 1, according to the board’s terms.
