UND’s tennis player Ronkowski named all-Big Sky
UND recorded another first in its affiliation with the Big Sky Conference.
UND’s Callie Ronkowski received second team all-Big Sky honors Thursday, marking the first time a North Dakota tennis player has earned such honors.
The junior from Grand Forks Red River finished 7-3 in the league and 11-7 overall as UND finished 3-7 in the Big Sky and 6-13 overall.
“For us, it’s a big deal,” said UND coach Tom Wynne. “In our first year in the league, we didn’t even have anyone nominated for all conference.
“Callie was pretty solid all year.”
UND improved as a team in the Big Sky as well. Last season, its first in the league, North Dakota went 0-10 in the Big Sky and 3-16 overall.
Ronkowski led the team in singles wins and recorded eight straight wins in a row from Feb. 7 through March 9, which helped UND win five in a row.
Twice, Ronkowski was named the Big Sky player of the week.
Ronkowski closed out the season with back-to-back road wins over Montana and Montana State. She defeated regular season Big Sky Conference champion Precious Gbadamosi of Montana and Montana State’s Paulina Lopez by scores of 6-2, 6-2, and 6-4, 6-0, respectively.
Ronkowski also served as co-captain and received the team’s Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player awards.
Sacramento State won its 13th straight Big Sky title to advance to the NCAA tournament. The Hornets, who beat Montana 4-3 in the league championship match, will play No. 1 UCLA in the first round of the NCAA tournament May 9.
Riewer receives honor
UND senior Patrick Riewer has been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The pitcher-outfield from Wadena, Minn., carries a 4.0 grade point average in chemical engineering. The Academic All-America program recognizes the country’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Riewer pitched UND past North Dakota State earlier this week. He’s currently batting .242 with 14 runs and one home run.
