Swimmers, supporters gather for fundraiser celebration at East Grand Forks pool

Two years ago the East Grand Forks City Council was debating whether or not to even allow the East Grand Forks Pool to keep operating. The pool, being the oldest in the city, was in desperate need for renovations.

Luckily for swimmers in East Grand Forks the city council came to the decision to give the pool $1.5 million dollars towards basic renovations in 2016. Money for “special” amenities however, such as splash features or a water slide, would have to be independently raised by the pool itself and the local community.

“Everyone has gone above and beyond to raise awareness,” said East Grand Forks mom Melody Olstad who is a key contributor to the Save Our Pool (S.O.P) Fundraiser Celebration.  “We want to show strong community support and involvement so we can raise more money.”

The pool has seen significant donations during the summer by many area businesses such as Triangle Coach Bus Service, Hugo’s Grocery, and Widseth Smith Nolting, who pledged $5000 dollars over the next five years so that “exciting” additions, such as splash water features and a new slide, can be added to the pool.

“There was a group of us who said we needed to have a pool,” said Melody. “This is a perfect location and we felt like we needed to rally around it.”
