SUMMER FARE: A weekend just for kids
Icelandic State Park near Cavalier, N.D., is inviting kids and their families to enjoy an entire weekend devoted to kids this Friday through Sunday.
The “Knights and Princesses” themed weekend will be full of crafts, games, entertainment, contests and excitement.
The weekend starts with a scavenger hunt at 7 p.m. Friday in the amphitheater, followed by a prince and princesses costume contest where kids 12 and younger can come dressed as their favorite character.
On Saturday kids ages 9 to 12 can meet at the picnic shelter at 9 a.m. to register for the Iron Kid contest, a triathlon-type event. A bike helmet and closed-toe shoes are required. The Iron Kid event will be followed by the Aluminum Kid event for ages 3 to 8. Arts and crafts will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. in the picnic shelter, which includes tie-dying (bring your own T-shirt), button making and face painting, while events like the Knight’s Quest, Seed Spitting and Coloring Contest will take place throughout the day.
Later in the evening, comedy, juggling and unicycle-riding Don B will perform at the amphitheater at 7:30 p.m., followed by an ice cream social and door prize drawings.
Events wrap up Sunday with a fishing derby at 9 a.m. for ages 15 and younger and a sand castle contest on the beach from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for ages 12 and younger. Prizes will be given out for the two events to conclude the weekend.

Water Carnival: East Grand Forks is holding a water carnival from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the East Grand Forks Swimming Pool. The carnival will feature the biggest-splash contest, duck race, penny dive, invisible bottle find, T-shirt relay, face painting and more. There will also be “Dunk-A-Lifeguard” dunk tank with three balls starting at $1, plus tubes available for $5. All proceeds will benefit Save Our Pool. Concert Nights at the Gazebo: Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and refreshments and enjoy an evening of outdoor entertainment. Roseau, Minn., will hold concerts from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays at the gazebo in Roseau Riverview Park. This coming Thursday, Tami and the Northern Lights Band will perform. Cost: Free. Buck-an-Ear Picnic: Turtle River State Park near Arvilla, N.D., is celebrating its 80th birthday from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Agassiz Picnic Shelter. There will be $1-an-ear corn with all of the fixings, plus hotdogs and hamburgers as a fundraiser to support activities within the park. There will also be games, crafts and free birthday cake, and Cabela’s is sponsoring prizes for the best-dressed pirate. Info: (701) 594-4445.
Movie in the Park: Enjoy movies under the stars throughout the summer at various Grand Forks parks. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy family-friendly classics, action, adventure and new releases. The next film will be “The Lego Movie” starting at sundown Aug. 12 at Riverside Park.
