Saltwater spills in McKenzie County
Grand Forks North Dakota 375 2nd Ave. N. 58203

ARNEGARD, N.D. -- A Statoil pipeline in McKenzie County has leaked 75 barrels of saltwater, according to preliminary estimates by the company.

Statoil believes the leak is less than a week old, as an aerial inspection of the pipeline was done July 18, and no leak was observed, the North Dakota Department of Health said in a media release.

The pipeline is about five miles northwest of Arnegard. Statoil is reviewing records to confirm its preliminary estimate.

Saltwater from the leak migrated toward an oxbow or U-shaped bend of Timber Creek and a small amount may have entered the oxbow.

Brady Espe, an environmental scientist with the health department, said the spill has been isolated. A dike has been constructed to contain fluid on the surface.

Health department personnel will be working with the company on cleanup.
