REVIEW: McDonald’s Chocolate Covered Strawberry Frappe

Email News Alerts

FARGO – For Valentine’s Day last year, my family surprised me with a dozen chocolate-covered strawberries. They were large and luscious with thick candy coating.

Now McDonald’s is offering a McCafe version of that ubiquitous Valentine’s Day treat.

The Chocolate Covered Strawberry Frappe has all the flavors its name promises, but is missing a crucial ingredient: real fruit.

My frappe looked like a chocolate mousse, topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of red syrup. It smelled like strawberries.

The first sip was delicious, a good blend of chocolate and strawberry, though I didn’t taste the hint of coffee promised in the frappe’s description.

It was creamy and icy with chunks of chocolate (my favorite part of McDonald’s Chocolate Chip Frappe). But I longed for bits of real fruit.

The strawberry flavor in the frappe comes from syrup, and some sips that were syrup heavy were a bit too sweet.

I would have also enjoyed a chocolate drizzle on top of the whipped cream, along with the strawberry.

It’s not a diet-friendly treat. A small frappe has 570 calories, according to mcdonalds.com. It’s priced at $2.79 ($3.29 for medium and $3.79 for large).

Still, the flavors were on target.

While I normally shy away from frozen drinks in winter, this frappe and its chocolate-strawberry combo is February-worthy.
