Prom 2014 is projected to cost an average of $1,139 per couple, according to Visa Inc. The average projected cost for Midwestern families is $835. That cost includes the dress, tuxedo, tickets to the dance, shoes, hair, boutonniere and limo rides.

Local experts in the prom industry break down those costs:

  •  Dress: Nancy Zalewski, owner of Kristen’s Bridal said the average cost for prom dresses is $300 to $800, but, students can cut costs by borrowing or buying used dresses.
  •  Tuxedo: The guys don’t have quite as high a ticket price, as they typically rent their tuxedos for the night. At Tip Top Tux in Columbia Mall, rental tuxedos start at $89.95 and go as high as $199. They also offer $40 off to all prom-goers.
  •  Flowers: As for the flowers, Jane Farmer, floral shop manager at All Seasons, said there are all sorts of different wristlets for the corsages. “We have some with rhinestones that turn into bracelets … and some just plain elastic,” she said. “The wristbands themselves can go from $3 to $20, and then the corsage average would be anywhere from $20 to $40.”

For the guys, she said boutonnieres cost $8 to $15.

  •  Hair: Kristi Skyberg, stylist at The Ultimate Look, said prom hair do’s vary greatly in style and costs run anywhere from $45 to $75, depending on the time and intricacy.
  •  Nails: Along with their hair, many girls also choose to get their nails done, which cost $15 to $45 depending on the salon and polish used.
  •  Limousine: Debbie Inocencio, owner of Elegant Limousine, said she gets a dozen or more limousine requests from prom-goers around the area every weekend of prom. She said depending on the size and style of limo and how long the group reserves it, costs start at $250 and run as high as $1,000. But, she said the average for prom groups falls from $500 to $600, with each student typically paying about $30.
  •  Tickets: Tickets for the dance cost $15 to $25, depending on the school and the event.

Other optional prom purchases include the garter, a bouquet, tanning, photographs, the dinner and after-prom activities.
