A look ahead to 2014

Four teams to watch

Hatton-Northwood: The Thunder finished second in the region last season, their third straight berth in the final. While their top three hitters graduated, Mallory Twete (143 kills, 56 aces) and Kari Hillesland (96 kills) return at hitting positions, and Kati Lloyd is expected to be a third option. Jeni Lloyd (765 assists, 62 aces) is one of the region’s top setters. The defense, led by Twete (297 digs), Kati Lloyd (179 digs) and Emily Anderson, is expected to be a strength.

Hillsboro-Central Valley: No team in the region returns a deeper collection of hitters than the Burros. Back from a team that placed fourth in the Region 2 tournament are Rachel Murphy (223 kills, 89 blocks, 61 aces), Kylie Pastian (209 kills, 40 aces) and Payton Kritzberger (136 kills, 78 blocks). Back to split time at setter are Shayla Fossum (358 assists) and Adrianna Delvo (271 assists).

Park River/Fordville-Lankin: The strength of the Aggies starts with versatile fourth-year starters Hannah Swartz and Claire Welch. Swartz (190 kills, 231 assists) and Welch (125 kills, 208 assists, 58 blocks) split time at setter in the PR/FL 6-2 offense. Seven rotation regulars return from a 16-15 team, including hitter Katie Bohn (95 kills) and libero Erin Kovarik (162 digs, 61 service aces), while 6-foot sophomore Taylor Dalbey could provide more punch at the net.

Thompson: Graduation hit the two-time defending Region 2 champion Tommies hard. Thompson does have some building blocks, however. Johanna Loyland (447 assists, 51 aces) is an experienced setter. Shaice Marx (240 kills, 69 blocks) is a big hitter and Emily Overby (74 kills, 24 blocks) and Beka Stoe (55 kills) saw some rotation time at the net.
