PREP TRACK: EGF senior throws personal-record
ST. PAUL — Brock Scheving matched his seed with a personal-record throw Friday.
Scheving, a senior at East Grand Forks Senior High, placed sixth in the Class A boys shot put on the opening day of the Minnesota high school state track meet.
Scheving had a personal-record throw of 51 feet, 1¾ inches to get his sixth-place finish.
“We were hoping he could maybe place a little higher,” Senior High coach Kirk Misialek said. “But he got a PR. He competed really well. He was at the (50-foot) chalk line consistently.”
Three of Scheving’s six throws exceeded 50 feet. Four opponents topped 52 feet, with Jayme LaPlante of Chatfield winning with a 56-11½ toss.
Senior High also had a big performance in the 4x400 relay prelims. The Wave quartet of Austin Kloety, Tanner Seim, Miguel Perez and Zach Tingelstad ran a school-record time of 3 minutes, 26.84 seconds. It was the fourth-fastest time in the prelims.
“They smashed our old record,” Misialek said. “They had a great race.”
Senior High also will compete in the 4x800 relay final today. Perez in the 800 ran a personal record in Friday’s prelims, while the Wave 4x100 relay team had a season-best time, but neither qualified for finals.
“When kids can run a PR, they can smile and know they did their best,” Misialek said. “You can’t ask for more than that. It was a successful day for us.”
Biermaier tops 300 field
Thief River Falls sophomore Meleah Biermaier had the fastest time Friday in the Class AA girls 300 hurdles prelims.
Biermaier had a time of 43.55 seconds. In second was Rocori’s Erin Huls (43.63). They were the only two with sub-44 second times in the prelims. Biermaier edged Huls in the 300 in the 8AA meet.
Biermaier was runner-up at state in the 300s last season after winning the state title as an eighth-grader in 2012.
Biermaier also reached the 100 hurdle finals. She was No. 8 in the prelims at 15.03 seconds.
