PREP TENNIS: Round one goes to Red River junior

FARGO -- This season, Round 1 goes to Greg Wischer.

The Grand Forks Red River junior beat teammate Joey Anderson 6-3, 7-6 (6) to win the East Region singles title in Fargo.

It was a rematch of last year's East Region and state championship, both won by Anderson.

Wischer, who played No. 1 for Red River at the region tournament, came out ahead in this battle between the state's top two players. They will likely meet for the state singles crown next week, which will be held again in Fargo.

Wischer didn't drop a single game in the Round of 16, quarterfinals or semifinals of the tournament, blanking all three opponents 6-0, 6-0. He topped Fargo Shanley's Ander Sawchuk by that score in Saturday morning's semifinals.

Anderson reached the final by beating West Fargo's North Knewtson 6-3, 6-2.

Two other Grand Forks players reached the state tournament by winning consolation qualifying matches Saturday. Red River's Andrew Godon will be the No. 6 seed from the East, while Grand Forks Central's Dallas Chambers will be the No. 7 seed.

In the doubles competition, West Fargo's Brady Ballweber and Keyan Farahmand upset defending state champs Andre Caoili and Jake Kuhlman 6-3, 6-4 in the finals. Caoili and Kuhlman will take the No. 2 seed from the East to the state tournament.

Caoili and Kuhlman beat Central's Andrew Thompson and Kyle Folson in the semifinals. Thompson and Folson finished fourth.

Red River's second doubles team of Mitchell Kuhlman and Ryan Kenyon also qualified for state, finishing the region tournament in fifth.
