Park district to host ‘Family Fun Night’
Face-painting, a magic show, inflatable games, pizza, a parade, a movie, popcorn — all outdoors. If it’s not a kid’s paradise, it’s close.
Everyone is welcome to attend Family Fun Night on Tuesday at University Park in Grand Forks, said Lynn Roche, special events manager for the Grand Forks Parks District, event sponsor.
Set for 5 to 8 p.m., the free event is “the ultimate neighborhood block party,” offering fun and family games for young and old alike, Roche said. No registration is necessary.
“There’s a lot of things to do,” she said.
For example, the Red River Valley Gymnastics organization will spread out mats on which kids can roll and tumble, Roche said.
A parade will feature kids who’ve been involved in the park district’s Just for Fun program and Smile, a program for kids with special needs, she said. The summertime arts, craft and activities program, Just for Fun is offered at 13 park district sites throughout the city.
The kids have chosen various themes for their Just for Fun Parade costumes, she said. Expect to see Ninja turtles, ballerinas and American patriots dressed in red, white and blue.
Set to begin about 6 p.m., the parade will thread through the park from the warming house to the tennis courts.
Free pizza, fruit and lemonade will be served.
An old-time movie, “The Little Rascals,” begins at sundown, she said. Popcorn, candy and beverages will be sold for a minimal charge.
“The magician will probably bring a bunny,” she said. “The bunny’s always a big hit.”
She’s also hoping that the movie “will bring in young and old as well,” she said.
“I like to say we get babies and grandparents (in attendance). It’s all about families.”
Family Fun Night is hosted by the park district every year in late July as a way to celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month, Roche said.
