The new path is about a half-mile long and 10 feet wide, and was paid for with the help of federal grant supporting alternative transportation projects.

City Engineer Al Grasser said the path is offset from 42nd Street to accommodate future widening of the road.

He said the city would probably apply for more grant money to extend the path farther next year.
