N.D. petition for later school start filed with state

A petition requiring North Dakota’s schools to start after Labor Day appears to have more signatures than necessary for the November ballot, the North Dakota Secretary of State’s Office said Wednesday.

The sponsoring committee delivered petitions that morning with about 16,500 signatures. A petition must contain at least 13,452 signatures of qualified state voters to be placed on the ballot.

The secretary of state has until Sept. 10 to determine whether the signatures are sound. The measure would then appear on the ballot on Nov. 4.

On Monday, a Facebook post called “Start ND School after Labor Day” claimed that petition organizers had more than 15,300 signatures for the petition.

Linda Striebel of Bismarck, the co-chairwoman of the petition's sponsoring committee, could not be reached for comment.
