MEN'S BASKETBALL: UND lands verbal from Texas high school player
As the UND men’s basketball team tries to replace an experienced, deep senior class from the 2013-14 season, the coaching staff appears to be reaching far and wide for the next round of athletes.
Kraig Shields, of Kyle, Texas, announced his verbal commitment to UND via Twitter last weekend.
Shields, a slender, athletic 6-foot-8 forward, is one of four new players expected to join UND in the fall.
UND has previous commitments from center Bryce Cashman of Weston, Mo., junior college forward Josiah Coleman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and guard Geno Crandall of Minneapolis.
North Dakota will also have the first-year service of guard Estan Tyler (transfer from Missouri-Kansas City) and center Carson Shanks (transfer from Utah State).
Shanks will be eligible for the second semester next season.
Shields’ father, Clayton Shields, is a former Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year at the University of New Mexico. He also played professionally in a number of different countries.
With its experienced team, UND finished second in the Big Sky Conference postseason tournament in March.
