MEN'S BASKETBALL: UND lands juco transfer
The UND men’s basketball team has started the process of replacing its large senior class, a group that advanced to a postseason tournament all four years.
Iowa Western Community College 6-foot-5 forward Josiah Coleman has given his verbal commitment to play at North Dakota.
Coleman, who was on UND’s campus last weekend, averaged 9.6 points and 6.3 rebounds for the Cougars as a sophomore.
Iowa Western comes from the same junior college as Alonzo Traylor, who was a senior for UND last year.
Out of high school, Coleman received NCAA Division I scholarship offers from Wyoming, Coppin State and Sacramento State. However, he wasn’t academically eligible for a major college scholarship.
Coleman’s father, Jamie Pettigrew, spoke to the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Gazette about his son’s future earlier this year.
“Right now I’d say Joe is one of those guys who wasn’t ready-made in high school,” said Pettigrew, who coaches the AAU’s Iowa Barnstormers. “We knew he had potential. He was kind of a late bloomer.
“His first year at Iowa Western, the first part of the season, he really reached his defensive potential. He became a lockdown defender for them. The second half of the season, he kind of brought his offense into play and started shooting a lot. He’s always been a good shooter, but he kind of had trouble putting it all together.”
