Man lights himself on fire at Jamestown park
JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- A 47-year-old Jamestown man reportedly set himself on fire in McElroy Park at about 10:15 a.m. Thursday, according to Jamestown police Sgt. Justin Blinsky.
The man's name was withheld pending notification of family.
Blinsky said the man called dispatch at about 10 a.m. asking to speak with an officer at the park at 10:15.
"Officers were dispatched and arrived a short time later," he said. "The male arrived in his personal vehicle and began pouring gasoline over his entire body. He began to walk towards the area where the officer was in a squad car and ignited himself using a lighter."
Officers at the scene used fire extinguishers from the squad car to put out the fire.
"We requested assistance of the (Jamestown) Fire Department to assist with the flammable liquid and verify the safety of the vehicle," Blinsky said.
The man was transported by ambulance to Jamestown Regional Medical Center with injuries described as "critical" by Blinsky.
