Man knifes himself after standoff with police in Detroit Lakes

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. - A 25-year-old man was taken to the hospital after reportedly cutting himself with a knife during a short standoff with police in Detroit Lakes.

The incident happened shortly after noon on Wednesday.

According to the Detroit Lakes Police Department, officers were called to Central Market grocery store for a disturbance involving a knife.

Sgt. Chad Glander with the Detroit Lakes Police Department says the man fled on foot before officers found him on the north side of the St. Mary’s/Essentia Health building in the downtown area.

According to a press release from the Detroit Lakes Police Department, when the man was confronted by law enforcement, he put two knives to his own throat.

When officers attempted to take the man into custody, there was a struggle, during which time the man reportedly cut himself in his throat.

Medical personnel were already on standby when this occurred, and immediately transported him to St. Mary’s Hospital where he remains with non-life threatening injuries.

Detroit Lakes police were assisted by members of Becker and Ottertail County Sheriff’s Departments.

The Becker County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case for possible charges.
