LETTER: Focus on alcohol’s threat to N.D.’s health
MESA, Ariz. — This letter is in response to Jay Taylor’s letter on raising tobacco taxes (“For health’s sake, raise North Dakota’s tobacco tax,” Page A4, July 3).
I wonder if Taylor realizes that according to the Centers for Disease Control, alcohol abuse costs North Dakota $400 million a year?
Also, while North Dakota is ranked 30th in alcohol taxes in the country, it’s No. 2 behind Wisconsin in binge drinking.
There was an master of ceremonies at an old comedy club in Grand Forks who had moved there from Missouri. Within two weeks, he was joking about how if he drank in Missouri the way people drank in Grand Forks, he would be considered an alcoholic.
I suggest that Taylor focus more on this than on his bias against tobacco.
