LETTER: Abeler can hold HMOs accountable
WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. —As a health care reform activist, I have fought against the special privilege our government gives to HMOs to “manage” the care of Medicaid patients.
These corporations get our taxpayer money, but refuse to reveal the itemized receipts to government auditors to prove they’re doing the job correctly. This is unacceptable.
Now, there’s an experienced Republican candidate who agrees with me how truly outrageous it is that HMO “managers” remain unaccountable to the taxpayer. Jim Abeler wants to fight this lack of transparency in the U.S. Senate.
Happily, former U.S. Sen. Dave Durenberger has come out against the Republican endorsement to declare that he’s voting for Abeler for U.S. Senate on Aug. 12.
There is ample evidence that HMOs are pocketing excessive profits with no accountability on how they actually spend the public funds allocated to them. This has been reported by no less than the federal Government Accountability Office. Jim Abeler wants your vote to tackle this appalling situation.
Your vote for him on Aug. 12 is a vote to defend our federal health programs from deteriorating into a useless and painful mess at the hands of exploitive corporations.
