Kathleen Meagher, Grand Forks, letter: Thanks for helping 'Dancing' event succeed
GRAND FORKS -- It's still the talk of the town -- a dance performance of Grand Forks' dancing celebrities and partners that stunned a nearly sellout crowd in the Empire Arts Center on April 6 and was as popular as the TV show "Dancing with the Stars."
Fourteen local celebrities partnered with local dance instructors and dancers and should have had national recognition for showing their talents while raising money and awareness for "special" stars -- North Dakota Special Olympics participants.
Thank you to the volunteer committee that organized the event. Thank you to our talented emcee and to the local various dance and vocal talents who performed.
Also, many thanks to the local celebrities and dancers for their courage to dance with someone they'd only met for the first time (in some cases) less than a month ago, and their willingness to be judged on their live stage performances by the audience.
Their performances were spectacular and entertaining. This is the same courage that so often is shown by the participants in Special Olympics -- facing the unknown and constantly being judged by others on our capabilities.
Last but not least, thanks to those who supported the event with their generous inkind and financial contributions. All were significant in making this event successful.
Meagher is president and CEO of Special Olympics North Dakota.
