Joan K. Guerard";
Joan Guerard was born to Adolph and Emma (Fuller) Giese on November 23, 1929 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She attended school in East Grand Forks, Minneapolis, and graduated in 1947 from Warren High School in Warren, Minnesota. Joan married Cecil W. Guerard on April 3, 1948.
Even though Joan quit smoking in 1985 following Cecils death, she battled thirty years of consequences from COPD. In December, 2013, Joan was diagnosed with lung cancer that spread to her brain, lymph glands and spine. Joan was treated by the caring staff at Golden Living Center in Walker, Minnesota; Good Samaritan Heritage Grove in East Grand Forks, Minnesota; Altru Cancer Center and Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota; Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood, North Dakota; Hospice of the Red River Valley. On Friday morning, July 18, Joan was granted peace from her worldly suffering at the Northwood Deaconess Nursing Home.
Joan founded, owned, and operated Guerards Body Shop, later known as Guerards Bee Line, with Cecil and Michael Guerard. In the 1950s, Joan also worked as a receptionist/secretary for KNOX Radio and enjoyed the beginnings of KNOX Television. Joan was well known for her expertise as a seamstress and tailor. She created beautiful garments for a variety of occasions for family, friends, and clients. Joan and her sister, Shirley, created and produced patterns and garments for Country Carriage, a western wear company. Joan always yearned for a college degree. She was very proud to acknowledge that her children and grandchildren accomplished her goal for them in higher education.
Joan and Cecil called in Grand Forks home until 1968. They built their dream home on the river near Manvel, North Dakota where they raised St. Bernards and had a hobby farm. After Cecils death, Joan moved from Manvel back to the Chateau Townhome in Grand Forks. She began working in various departments for the City of Grand Forks and cherished the friendships she developed.
As a survivor of the Grand Forks/East Grand Forks 1997 Flood, Joan relocated to Walker, Minnesota to begin a new chapter in her life at the age of 68. Joan purchased a townhome at Camp LaPine and thoroughly treasured her new found friends, community, and church. She worked at Northern Exposure in Walker for many years and joined Hope Lutheran Church. She feverishly sewed quilts with the quilters at Hope Lutheran Church and volunteered at the Food Shelf.
Joan broke her pelvis and lost her dear friend, Dick Lillie, in September, 2012. She was unable to return to independent living at her beautiful home at Camp LaPine on Leech Lake. In March, 2013, Joan reluctantly moved back to East Grand Forks to begin the closing chapter in her life.
Joan is survived by her children, Michael Guerard (Grand Forks, North Dakota) and Linda (Jay) Croy (East Grand Forks, Minnesota); granddaughter, Lisa (Gordon) Richards (Enon Valley, Pennsylvania); great grandchildren: Reece Richards and Mel Gray (West Fargo, North Dakota), Peyton Richards (Enon Valley, Pennsylvania) and Croix Richards (Enon Valley, Pennsylvania); siblings: Shirley Sanderson (Northwood, North Dakota), Conrad Giese, (Euclid, Minnesota), Meryl Barry (Grand Forks, North Dakota); sisters-in-law, Patricia (Bob) Owens (Ocala, Florida) and Annabelle (Larry) Witte (Grand Rapids, Minnesota), many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
