Grand Forks County has taken another step in the process of establishing a business park for unmanned aerial systems at the Grand Forks Air Force Base.

The U.S. Air Force recently gave the county approval of its master developer for Grand Sky, the name of the business park. The Air Force Civil Engineer Center approved the selection of FDSL, a joint venture between the principles of the FD Stonewater and Lynx companies.

"This is another big step in moving Grand Sky forward," County Commissioner John Schmisek said in a news release. "The county is very appreciative of the Air Force's effort to turn this approval around quickly."

The county has started negotiations with FDSL to complete the developer agreement. FDSL is expected to come to Grand Forks in early December to meet with regional stakeholders.

Base Commander Paul Bauman, in his State of the Base talk Thursday morning, said the proposed lease would involve more than 200 acres of unutilized land.

"It's a win-win situation for the base and the community," Col. Bauman said.

The GFAFB is not involved in the project other than providing space for the UAS development.
