“I am the sum of my parts, and this award recognizes all of the educational influences I have had in my life,” said Ryberg. “Teaching is not something we can do alone.”

Sue Anderson from Richardton-Taylor High School in Richardton, N.D., was also given the award. The selection was based on colleague nominations and letters of reference.

Ryberg, who teaches ninth through 12th-grade students, credited her win in part to what she’s learned at NDCTE annual conferences and from her Grand Forks colleagues. She’s learned different ways to use technology, techniques to get students writing more and other ways to improve student learning, she said.

For instance, she’s had her students engage in “digital storytelling.”

They interview someone in their life, research what they’ve been told and create video documentaries, she said.

Ryberg has been with Grand Forks Public Schools for 11 years.
