Grand Forks apartment building evacuated after fire reported

A Grand Forks apartment building was evacuated late Sunday morning after a fire was reported in a second floor unit.

The Grand Forks Fire Department responded to the fire shortly after it was reported at 11:30 a.m. in the Columbia Square South apartments at 2500 Knight Drive.

Fire Captain Bob Kramer said one person was taken by ambulance to Altru Hospital, but he did not know their condition. The offical cause of the fire and the amount of damage it caused to the unit were also unknown as of Sunday afternoon.

Kramer wasn't sure when the unit's tenants would be able to return to the apartment.

"We still need to go through the proper procedures to make sure eveything is safe," he added.

The fire remains under investigation.

This is a breaking story. Check back later for more information.
