FOOTBALL: UND nabs drop-down transfer
The UND football team’s biggest area of need in the fall — cornerback — received a boost on Monday.
The school announced the addition of Alex Tillman, a transfer from the University of Houston.
Tillman spent four years at Houston, which includes a redshirt season. He will have one year of eligibility for UND.
North Dakota went through spring practices with four cornerbacks, including just one with game experience at UND.
At Houston, Tillman played as a reserve defensive back as a junior. He appeared in all 13 games, making nine tackles. The Cougars finished 8-5 and played in the BBVA Compass Bowl.
“We think Alex will come in and compete right away for playing time at the cornerback position,” UND coach Bubba Schweigert said. “He is a physical defender that can play in one-on-one situations and also has the skills to play in zone schemes. He was a key special teams player at the FBS level, as well, and we also expect the same out of him in those areas.”
In high school, Tillman was a decorated quarterback at Northshore High School in Houston.
Chris Brown is the only remaining corner among the four players on last year’s two-deep cornerback depth chart. Daryl Brown and Rumeal Harris transferred, while Chris Hall was a senior.
