From flashlights to fishing lures, here are a few ideas to get you started:

ThermaCELL Torch

I’ve written about ThermaCELL products in the past, and with mosquito season in full swing, I won’t be leaving home without one for the next few months.

If you’ve spent any time outdoors in the past week or — at least outside of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks city limits — you know the mosquitoes are absolutely brutal.

ThermaCELL’s latest product is this flameless torch that does double duty as a mosquito repellant and a table lantern. As with traditional ThermaCELL units, the torch operates on a single butane cartridge that heats a repellant mat that releases allethrin, a natural insecticide found inside chrysanthemums that keeps mosquitoes at bay. The torch creates a 15- by 15-foot “comfort zone” and comes with one butane cartridge and three repellant mats. The cartridge lasts about 12 hours, and each mat lasts up to four hours.

About $39.99, available at various retail outlets; thermacell.com.

Rapala electric fillet knife

I know purists who turn up their noses at the idea of filleting fish with an electric knife, but they’re definitely in the minority.

From the company known for its filleting knives, Rapala’s entry into the electric knife market is billed as being twice as past and three times as powerful as your average electric knife. Perfect, in other words, for slicing through walleyes, perch or any other species Dad brings home from a day on the water.

The knife also has an 8-foot power cord and 7½-inch blades.

About $60, available at various retail outlets; rapala.com.

‘The Compleat Angler’

Some books stand the test of time, and Izaak Walton’s “The Compleat Angler” is one of them. The Izaak Walton League, which is approaching its 100th anniversary, recently issued a new edition of Walton’s philosophical look at fishing, first published in 1653.

In a news release, the Izaak Walton League said “The Compleat Angler” is the second-most reprinted book in the English language behind the King James Bible.

“You don’t have to travel to England to appreciate Walton’s vision for a ‘brotherhood of the angle’,” Bob Chapman, Izaak Walton League national president, said in a statement. “In defending angling as the best of outdoor sports, Walton’s Piscator tells his fellow sportsmen, ‘O Sir, doubt not but that Angling is an Art,’ a sentiment shared by anyone who has enjoyed a quiet day with a fishing rod.”

The new edition of “The Compleat Angler” is available through various outlets, including amazon.com; $15 to $20.

Olympia LED flashlight

Don’t let Dad get caught in the dark. The rugged Olympia RG850 flashlight is lightweight and waterproof, making it the perfect complement to any hiking, hunting, fishing or camping trip.

The RG850 has five light settings: low, medium, high, strobe and SOS for emergency situations, and it automatically remember the last used setting.

The Olympia RG850 flashlight retails for $89.99, which includes the flashlight, one micro-USB cable with wall adaptor, one 18650 rechargeable battery, one nylon holster with dedicated belt loop and a D-ring, lanyard, belt clip, an extra tail switch cap, two extra O-rings and user guide.

 The RG850 is available on Amazon.com; www.olympiaproducts.com.

Mepps Piker kit

Everything Dad wants to land big pike is included in the Mepps Piker kit. It’s no secret that pike love spoons and spinners, and this set offers six of Mepps’ best trophy pike lures: four dressed spinners and two Cyclops spoons.

All of the lures in the Piker kit feature solid brass bodies and blades. Silver blades are silver plated, and vinyl finishes resist chipping.

Available through numerous retail and online outlets for $35 to $40; mepps.com.
