Family identified in fatal shooting of boy by his brother

FREEMAN, S.D. -- The Hutchinson County State’s Attorney’s Office on Wednesday identified the family involved in a fatal shooting Tuesday in Freeman.

Dakota Hofer, 9, accidentally shot and killed his brother, Sean Hofer, 8, while playing with a revolver early Tuesday evening.

The parents of the two boys are Samuel and Christy Hofer.

Hutchinson County State’s Attorney Glenn Roth said Tuesday evening that Dakota Hofer was interviewed by investigators with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation after the shooting.

The 8-year-old was taken to a hospital in Freeman after authorities were notified of the shooting, Roth said. No charges have been filed, Roth added.

Roth originally said the victim was 7.

The investigation was conducted by the South Dakota DCI, the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office, and Freeman police.
