THE EATBEAT: Timbits are hot items at Hortons on 42nd Street
Grand Forks North Dakota 375 2nd Ave. N. 58203

The line was long -- almost impossible - the first time I stopped at the new Tim Hortons Cafe and Bake Shop on 42nd Street.

That was mid-December. The second time I stopped later on in December, the line was still there. But not as long.

I sidled into a small booth with a knowledgeable friend who said, "This place is going to do well. Look at all the building going on around here."

I looked. I shook my head in agreement. And I enjoyed a late breakfast of an egg, bacon and cheese on biscuit and a latte. Even if it was too sweet.

I am amazed at the wide array of foods available at this place that seems to be, at first glance, a drive-in. Actually, it is a quick cafe. It is part of the Canadian Tim Hortons restaurants and the first one in North Dakota. The food can run high in calories, but the wise customer learns to keep that in mind.

There are donuts for 95 cents and Danish for $1.35. Children love the Timbits that come in a box for $1.99.

Service seems slow, partly because the staff is new. Someone takes your order at the counter and you move on, wondering when it will be delivered. You sort of slither around and pick it up when they bring it to you.

The food is extensive. It comes in part-baked or frozen and is baked off in the restaurant. Breakfast starts at 5 a.m., and lunch begins at 10 a.m.

The owners say the place is basically a drive-thru. But since Hortons is new to Grand Forks, people want to go inside and see what it's like.

Hortons is attractive in brown tones and small booths and some tables. There is a simulated fire place.

There are soups and sandwiches at Hortons. One of the main attractions is the Timbits, bite-sized donut holes that are unique and inviting.

The local response is strong with people of all ages and from all corners of the city finding their way to Hortons.
