Doris A. Staples, 90, of Grand Forks, ND and formerly of Cavalier, ND passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Woodside Village in Grand Forks. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Cavalier Presbyterian Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 4th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier. Burial will be held in the Cavalier Cemetery.
Doris Annie Gelder was born April 18, 1923, at Bathgate, ND to Walter and Annie (Stewart) Gelder. She grew up in the Bathgate area and graduated from Bathgate High School.
On November 5, 1943, she married Laverne Staples at Bathgate. After their marriage they lived in Chicago and then returned to the Hamilton area. In 1965, their home and family moved into Cavalier. She later worked at Wilson Brothers in Cavalier. Spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and family gatherings were things she cherished. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, and baking for which she received many ribbons for at the Pembina County Fair. Doris was a charter member of the Hamilton Homemaker Club and a member of the Hamilton Methodist Church and Hamilton Methodist Ladies Aid.
Survivors include her husband, Laverne; daughters: Colleen Jorgensen, Fargo, Eleanor (Craig) Stuberg, St. Thomas, Lonnie Bonner, Fargo, Shelly (Guy) Kain, Grand Forks, Peggy Johnson, Fargo; grandchildren: Cory Jorgensen, Rory (Rhonda) Jorgensen; Lori (Tony) Johnson, Jason (Katie) Dewar, Kimberly (Allen) Anderson, Traci (Curt) Berg, Heidi (Nathan) Knudsen, Danielle Johnson; Toni (Charles) Confer, Amy (Travis) Zeugin; six great-grandchildren, six step great-grandchildren, one step great-great-grandson; sister, Nelda McDonald, Springfield, MO.
Preceding her in death were her parents; siblings: Jack and Cecil Gelder, and Margaret Staples.
