Donald J. Endres, 96, of Bloomington, MN and formerly of Grand Forks, ND passed away Monday, April 28, 2014 at Martin Luther Care Center in Bloomington.
Donald J. Endres was born October 17, 1917 in Dimock, SD. He was the first of 11 children born to John and Zillah (Swift) Endres. He spent his early years in South Dakota until moving to Grand Forks. Donald married Berniece M. Hanson on August 5, 1940 in St. Marys Cathedral in Fargo, ND. They were approaching their 74th wedding anniversary and had many great years of shared experiences. Donald entered the United Sates Army on October 17, 1942 at Fort Crook, NE and during World War II, served in the African Middle Eastern Theater. He was honorably discharged from military service with the rank if First Sargent on January 11, 1946 at Fort McCoy, WI. He lived most of his life in Grand Forks. For many years, he co-owned and operated Logans Clothing in East Grand Forks, MN and Crookston, MN. In his early years, he and Bernice owned Peoples Finance in Grand Forks and many other business ventures. He was a longtime and active member of St. Michaels Catholic Church. Until recent years, he spent the winters in Mesa, AZ and the summers at his favorite place, Maple Lake, MN. He spent the last 9 years living in the Minneapolis area, aging gracefully.
He loved to spend his time enjoying friends, golfing, fishing and shaking dice at Benoys Garage in Mentor, MN. He was a man with a big heart and always willing to help those in need. He had a fabulous sense of humor. He enjoyed playing tricks on friends, having debates about current events issues and sharing his wisdom. He was a man of great faith, which carried him through many trying times. His favorite wisdom in recent years was, "I have some great advice for you. Dont grow old!"
He is survived by his wife, Berniece, Bloomington, MN; his children, Mike (Peggy) Endres, Grand Forks, ND, Barb (Jeff) Hoffmann, Bloomington, MN; grandchildren, Scott Ross, Scott (Lauren) Endres, Matt Endres, Kyle Endres, Mitch Hoffmann, Katie Hoffmann, Michaela Hoffmann; a great-grandson, Will Endres and a great-granddaughter, Faye Ross.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Doris Loes, Ilene "Jake" Meinen; brothers, Lester, Rodell, Delbert "Red", Kenneth "Jim", John, Jr., Vilas "Doc", Bill and Melvin.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 in St. Michaels Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday with a 6:30 p.m. rosary service and 7:00 p.m. vigil service in the Historic Norman Funeral Home-Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Saturday.
Burial: Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.
Military Honors: Accorded by the American Legion Post 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota National Guard.
