The Nov. 6, 1978, Time reported Benedict, with 3,500 acres and half-million dollars in equipment, as "archetypal of the farmers who make U.S. agriculture the nation's most efficient and productive industry and by far the biggest force holding down the trade deficit." Benedict, of Sabin, Minn., was killed in a highway collision April 27, 2010.

FARGO -- Patrick Benedict spent his final hours in his comfort zone, cruising around Wilkin County, Minn., checking on fields being planted with sugar beet seed.

His son Blaine says that was typical of his 76-year-old father. He was a retired farmer, but he never really retired from farming.
