UND’s teams combine
for record 3.177 GPA
UND’s 400-plus athletes combined to achieve a 3.177 grade-point average during the 2013-14 academic year, the highest recorded single-year GPA in school history.
“We are so proud of the job our student-athletes do in balancing athletics and academics,” said UND athletic director Brian Faison. “At the University of North Dakota, ‘student’ really does come first in ‘student-athlete.’”
Seventeen of UND’s 21 teams boasted a 2013-14 GPA of 3.0 or better, led by women’s cross country (3.473), women’s swimming & diving (3.427), women’s hockey (3.425), men’s golf (3.424), women’s indoor track (3.417) and women’s outdoor track (3.417).
Additionally, 65 percent of UND’s athletes (266 out of 411) achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher during the Spring 2014 semester, including 54 with a perfect 4.0. Eighteen of those 54 own a cumulative 4.0 GPA.
“It was another amazing year,” said Amanda Hajdu, UND assistant athletic director for academic services. “Our student-athletes — and coaches, too — are dedicated to success in the classroom on the way to earning their degrees. It’s definitely something our athletics department is proud of.”
UND sends 3 to Hockey Canada camp
Three UND athletes have been selected by Hockey Canada to attend its National Women's Development Team selection camp, which takes place Aug. 8-17 in Calgary, Alberta.
Junior forwards Meghan Dufault and Becca Kohler, and sophomore defenseman Halli Krzyzaniak were among the 42 players named to the camp. The trio also trained with Hockey Canada at its National Women's Strength and Conditioning camp in May.
Dufault, Kohler and Krzyzaniak were all a part of the Canadian U18 team that won gold at the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women's World Championship, while Krzyzaniak also won gold with the U18 team at the 2013 IIHF World Championship.
From the selection camp, Hockey Canada will choose 22 players for a three-game series against the United States’ Women’s Under-22 Select Team, scheduled for Aug. 21-24 in Calgary, Alberta. Following the series, Hockey Canada scouts, along with the team’s coaching staff, will continue to evaluate players with their club teams during the 2014-15 season, in preparation for selecting the Canadian team that will compete at the 2015 Meco Cup in Germany next January.
The 42 players attending Canada’s National Women’s Development Team selection camp will be split into two teams, which will participate in several practices and intrasquad games, as well as off-ice dryland training, fitness testing and high performance classroom sessions.
