COLLEGE CLIPBOARD: Bjerk finishes eighth at track & field junior nationals
EUGENE, Ore. — Former Grand Forks Red River athlete Bryan Bjerk of the University of Minnesota finished eighth in the discus at the 2014 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships over the weekend.
Throwing as an unattached competitor at Oregon’s Hayward Field, Bjerk cleared a new personal record with his throw of 55.05 meters (180.07 ft.).
The mark bests his previous record of 54.98 meters (180-04 ft.) set earlier this season in a winning effort at the Musco Twilight on May 5.
Kord Ferguson won the discus competition this weekend with a toss of 61.28 meters (201-00 ft.).
PHILADELPHIA — Former UND center Chris VandeVelde has re-signed with the Philadelphia Flyers.
VandeVelde signed a one-year, two-way deal to stay with Philadelphia for a second season. He will make $575,000 if he’s playing in the NHL and $150,000 if he’s in the American Hockey League.
Last season, VandeVelde played 18 games with the Flyers and 41 games with the Adirondack Phantoms in the AHL.
