Cat found alive in apartment after fire
Grand Forks North Dakota 375 2nd Ave. N. 58203

The Grand Forks Fire Department is expecting to conclude its investigation Tuesday of an apartment fire Friday morning that put 40 residents out of their homes.

The fire in a 12-unit building at 2627 17th St. S., started in the southwest corner of a top floor apartment.

A final walkthrough of the damaged apartment building Sunday turned up a surprise -- a gray and black striped cat named Kitty.

The cat, owned by Jenny Swatlowski and her 4-year-old daughter, Layla, who lived in a basement apartment, was found about 7 p.m.

Swatlowski was told animals rescued from the building were going to be taken to the local Humane Society. She had planned to pick Kitty up there after the Christmas weekend.

"We were shocked," Swatlowski said. "She was in a box, so we didn't know if she was alive, but she made it. She was a little shaken up but she came right up to us."
