BOYS HOCKEY: Roseau boys headed to state after beating Moorhead
THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – Eight goals were scored in the second period between rivals Moorhead and Roseau on Wednesday night.
It was right down the middle with the Spuds and Rams each collecting four apiece, but it was Roseau senior forward Zach Yon – a University of North Dakota commit – who had the last say in the scoring frenzy.
Yon’s goal that closed the second period restored his team’s lead and ultimately helped the Rams to a 7-4 win over Moorhead in the championship game of the Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 boys hockey tournament at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
“That one definitely helped us bounce back,” said Yon, who finished with three goals and an assist. “It brought us back as a team and stopped them from getting any more momentum.”
The No. 19-ranked Rams (20-7-1) advance to the state tournament for the 34th time in school history. The Minnesota state tournament is set for March 5-8 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The Rams and Spuds have accounted for 24 of the last 25 Section 8 champions, including the last 17.
Roseau last won the section in 2010, defeating the Spuds 2-1.
“It is an absolute dream come true,” Yon said. “It was the last shot for our seniors, and we made it count. We are really excited to be going to state.”
Roseau led 1-0 after the first period, getting a goal from senior center Alex Strand.
Then the floodgates opened.
Moorhead (13-13-1) got a power-play goal from Jacob Odegard 1:52 into the second period to tie the game. It was one of three power-play goals the Spuds would collect in the period.
The only problem for the Spuds was Roseau answered every time. The Rams never trailed.
“We knew they had some special players, and you have to give them credit,” Moorhead head coach Jon Ammerman said. “They made some plays that we did our best to counter throughout the game, but unfortunately at the end of the night, they made a few more plays than our guys did. Our guys fought to the end though. It was an exciting game up and down.”
Senior center Aaron Herdt scored two unassisted goals for the Spuds. Grant Weiss also scored for Moorhead.
“That second period just showed Moorhead’s determination,” Roseau head coach Andy Lundbohm said. “They kept coming back, but fortunately we answered them every time.”
“It was pretty hard to stay composed in the second period,” Strand added. “They kept coming, and we kept right on going too. It was a fun period to play in.”
Roseau is 2-0-1 against the Spuds (13-13-1) this season. The Rams picked up a 3-0 win on Dec. 10 and the two Section 8 powers tied 1-1 on Jan. 23.
“We are a team if we give up seven goals we do not have a very good chance of winning,” Ammerman said. “It just wasn’t our night. The power-play goals were nice, but we gave up too many on the other end.”
Seeding and pairings for the state tournament will be announced Saturday.
