Blues on the Red kicks off on Saturday
For three Saturdays this summer, Grand Forks’ Town Square will once again have the blues.
Opening bands start at 6 p.m. with the headliners following at 8. Attendees can bring lawn chairs and sit wherever they’d like. There will also be a beer garden for those who are over 21 years old. If there is inclement weather, the show will move inside the Empire Theater.
Over the years, Blues on the Red has grown from a small gathering of hardcore blues music fans to something, said Cheri Reitmeier of the Blues on the Red committee. It started with about 300 people attending to now attracting more than 1,200 — causing the event organizers to run out of wristbands for the event.“What started as an itty bitty idea has grown into something huge, and to see people appreciate it is amazing,” Reitmeier said.Mooseknuckle Bros. were an opener last year but were so well received that they were invited back to headline the opening night.Mooseknuckle Bros. will be joined by the Cole Allen Band on June 28, Reverend Raven and the Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys will headline, with the Scottie Miller Band opening, on July 26, and the final Saturday, Aug. 23, will see The Swamp Kings open for the Lamont Cranston Band.“It’s a way to play live music and give something to do for all ages,” Reitmeier said. “Whether you like music or not, you can always appreciate the talent of the performers.”
